A Quick Timeline Of The Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro first came into being in the USA in 1966. General Motors, Chevrolet’s owners, were forced to produce a vehicle to give much needed competition to the sector controlling Ford Mustang. The 1967 Camaro shared a frame and many large components with the Pontiac Firebird (another General Motors project), and so the time required and cost required to make the Camaro were greatly reduced.

Often called an a muscle car, or a ‘Pony’ car, a name which back then referred to small vehicles that were within reach financially and had a sports feel about their looks (a trend initiated by the Ford Mustang in 1964), the car lined up alongside an ever increasing selection of vehicles that were fighting for an ever growing market. US buyers loved the power, the sports feel and the great value of such vehicles and the growing sales ensured that plenty of car builders put out their own variations out as rapidly as they could.

The 1970’s and 80’s saw the car’s heyday, when the car was sought after by millions of car enthusiasts, not only in the States but throughout the world. The balance of sports styling, performance and numerous TV shows using muscle cars contributed to a strong demand, and the desire for many to own one never disappeared.

So far there have been five distinct generations of the Camaro have been produced. Generations one to four were developed between 1966 and 2002 (when development of the Camaro and Firebird both ceased), and building of the fifth generation Camaro began once more in 2009 and against strong opposition to such polluting muscle cars from campaigners, the Camaro has been shown to once again be a big success with the American public.

The car was at times available in both a hardtop and a convertible, the convertible being extremely popular with owners from sea bordering states who loved the idea of driving along the beach boulevards with the roof down, the sounds up and the sunglasses on.

The Camaro has a massive fan base with some owners having owned every version of the Camaro at one time or another and others holding on to original 1960’s versions and keeping them in perfect condition.

The car was always a very popular car for modification during the cars lifetime, with owners spending weeks and months and lots of cash adding aftermarket parts to improve their Camaro’s looks and performance. Camaro’s have been hugely strong in autosport winning many Trans-Am series titles and numerous other races and championships through its lifetime. Plenty of racers still use old generation Camaro’s even now and are still successful, often winning against much more modern race cars.

The Camaro is still with us today, and with its history, power and great looks from the fifth generation version, the Camaro is bound to be around for a long time to come.

Knudsen’s Pontiac Division probably deserves to be credited with introducing the first bona fide Muscle Car, the mighty and magnificent GTO. Based on the Tempest, the Pontiac GTO was as fast, if nor faster, in a straight line than the Italian stallion whose initials it had cheekily usurped. The motorists of America simply revelled in it combination of style and potency. Soon everyone was in on the act, furiously pumping iron – and a lot of gas. The Oldsmobile 4-4-2 and the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport were followed in ‘67 by the Camaro. Ford soon added the splendid Shelby Mustangs to its celebrated ‘Pony Car’ line and Chrysler rounded out the decade with their incredible Dodge Daytona Charger and Plymouth Superbird. For a brief, glorious, uninhibited, period before the arrival of the oil crisis and restrictive legislation of the nineteen-seventies, American enjoyed the thrill of unfettered automotive power and every stop light became the start line of a drag strip.Essential Muscle Cars pays tribute to the legend and is lavishly illustrated with large format, full-colour, cut-out photographs of all the major models, along with a comprehensive technical specification of each. It will be the perfect reference book for everyone interested in America’s most interesting performance cars.

Since the early years of the internal combustion engine, engineers recognized that the hemispherical head design, which utilized dome-shaped combustion chambers, generated phenomenal horsepower. During World War II, Chrysler developed this extremely powerful engine design for tanks and other military vehicles. After the war the company applied this technology to a 330-cubic-inch V-8 destined for its 1951 production cars. This engine became so dominant on America’s racetracks and boulevards that its nickname–Hemi–came to symbolize the ultimate in American performance. Hemi Muscle Cars" tells the story of the magnificent Hemi-powered performance cars and explains why the Hemi has blown away the competition for six decades–and still does so today. More importantly, the book shows how this potent engine became a cultural icon, how it came to define American performance cars.
